We all know the famous ‘Shaken-not-stirred’ line from almost every James Bond film. Heck, you’ve even tried saying it in front of the mirror the same way he does. Did you order it? Did the ladies get impressed? Did you like it? Incase that happened to be the only cocktail you knew from a movie, you’d be pleased to find out there are a whole lot more.
The movie industry and alcohol are like two peas in a pod. Except for animated movies that is. Sponge Bob loves his krabby patties. Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp, Pirates of The Caribbean) Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio, Wolf of WallStreet) love their alcohol. So do many other characters in their movies. They may not have won an Oscar for being the best drinks but we love them all the same. Here are some famous cocktails made popular by the big screen:
1. The Vesper Martini
The one that kick-started it all. Ian Fleming, the writer of the James Bond series, brought this to life in his 1953 novel, Casino Royale. If you are the type that enjoys strong cocktails, this is an ideal fit for you just before dinner in a champagne goblet the same way Mr. Bond does, this cocktail should be right up your alley!
2. The Cosmopolitan
The cosmo was brought to the limelight by the hit series, Sex and The City. My mum never let me watch it for obvious reasons but I still doubt that it would be my style if I were to watch it today. The cocktail is a fun fruity one and is a favourite with the ladies. Does it unlock the feminine side of men when they drink it? I’ll have one of my friends try it out and let you know how it goes.
3. The White Russian
The second biggest alcohol – movie pairing after James Bond. This cocktail was resurrected in to the public eye by the film, The Big Lebowski. I haven’t seen this movie yet but it seems like worth the watch. The cocktail however is one for the books. An absolute favourite! Head down to your favourite spot if your looking to try one!
4. The Manhattan
Lets travel back to 1959 when movies were in black and white and sip on Marilyn Monroe’s favourite cocktail from the movie, Some Like It Hot. Although the drink is supposed to be served chilled with the ice shaken in a cocktail shaker, Marilyn used a hotwater bottle. Yeah, weird I know. I can bet that it will taste like chilled rubber and since no one wants to find out what exactly that tastes like, I highly suggest that you stick to the original shaker.
5. The Old Fashioned
You know that saying, don’t judge a book by its cover? I have a feeling this cocktail is not one to be taken lightly. Neither does it make you want to trade in your laptop for a typewriter. This cocktail was Ryan Gosling’s favourite in the film, Crazy Stupid Love. Have you watched the movie? Maybe not. Have you had the cocktail? If you haven’t, you should. You might even fall in love.
