A walk around Nairobi, you just have to notice the upsurge of cake ‘joints’ serving up delicious and not so delicious cakes but none the less its becoming a big business and many enterprising Kenyans are getting into this venture. Bigger cake making companies are stocking supermarkets with the packaged “cupcakes” while the supermarket bakeries are stocking up SUPER-SIZED ‘muffins’ that they are selling literally like hot cakes that they are!
Personally, I have been sucked into the cake making venture and I have seen a steady growth of customers asking for my services from birthday cakes to wedding cakes to gift ideas and personal treats! The most popular sell is the cup cakes and according to the survey done by Eat Out on the most popular cup cakes in Nairobi I have to agree 100% with the results.
I will try show you the difference between the MUFFIN and the CUPCAKE and will let you know what to look out for when determining what a proper cupcake or muffin is.
Definition of Cupcake and Muffin
Cupcake is a small cake baked in a special pan that can be eaten by one person in one sitting. Apart from their size, they have all the same attributes of a cake which can include frosting and other decorations.
Muffin is a type of semi-sweet cake or quick bread that is baked in portions appropriate for one person. They are similar to cupcakes, although they are usually less sweet and lack icing.
History of Cupcake and Muffin
Cupcake were originally baked in small pottery cups called ramekins before muffin pans were widely available. Their name came from the fact that they were baked in an actual cup. Later, cupcakes could refer to either small or regular sized cakes whose ingredients were measured in cups, teaspoons, etc., instead of weight measurements.
Muffins were originally baked at home and were simply small bread-like additions to a meal. However, as coffee shops started to take off, muffins became a healthy and more prestigious substitute for donuts or other pastries. Today, however, some muffins are so laden with sugar, chocolate, or nuts that they are just as unhealthy as the donuts they were originally replacing!
When it comes to recipes for cakes here in Kenya, one challenge a person gets after finding a recipe online or watching the “food network” is the availability of certain ingredients which are not available here. There’s is usually a substitute but then again, where’s the time to find that substitute!
Whatever option that is left is to buy from the many different cake shops but how do u tell what is good and not so good?
Appearance of Cupcakes and Muffins
Cupcake most of the time has frosting on the top and possibly sprinkles. Cupcakes are generally chocolate, vanilla or basically any other of your favorite cake recipe when you would want to make some at home. Some cupcakes are confetti style, which means that the vanilla cake has small pieces of rainbow colored candy mixed in with the butter.
Muffins may have a thin glaze or frosting drizzled over the top, but won’t have a thick pile of icing. They usually have stir-ins such as fruits, nuts, or chocolate. The top of the muffin is significantly larger than the bottom of the muffin.
