The 15th of November is Restaurant Day around the world. This is an international event where anyone can set up a restaurant anywhere for a day. So imagine your home becoming the hottest dinning spot in town for 24hrs.
How It Works
Get onto the Restaurant Day Facebook Group and read these guidelines about how to become an ambassador. It’s very long but very informative. In summary, to become a Restaurant Day Ambassador means participating and getting other people in your neighbourhood to participate in Restaurant Day.
If you agree with the terms and conditions then you are ready to turn your block into Nairobi’s new hottest dining spot.
How Do I Set Up?
Setting up a home restaurant is pretty easy (in theory) but takes a lot of work (in reality). But it is fun and you make some beautiful memories out of it. Here are 4 easy steps to your very own 24 hour restaurant.
What do you want to sell at your restaurant? 3 course meals or just snacks? Pick something and learn everything you can about making it for a mass public. In addition, design your restaurant space, if it is your home or otherwise, from order to plate. There should be a rhythmic flow to the process. Have fun, but also remember to make it work like a restaurant.
So, you have your nifty menu and your snazzy space. But now you need customers. Use social media, your church or temple bulletin board or even partner with an actual restaurant or a great site like EatOut for the day. This way you have lots of people flocking to taste your meals.
The next step is “to restaurant” which is horrible the verb I have made up for running a restaurant. Have the customers come over and serve them with delicious delicacies you have made in your very own kitchen. Ensure they enjoy the experience and take as many photos and video reactions as you can. But don’t be invasive. Ask first.
So, how did you like being a restaurant owner? Share your experience on social media with us and with the Restaurant Day international Facebook Group.
