The Glenfiddich whiskies are the most awarded single malt scotch whiskies in the world. If I was to give Glenfiddich whisky a persona, it would be that of a successful man who the best at what he does possesses charisma, warmth and a charm that makes him sociable and approachable. He is a go-getter, an optimist who exudes confidence and is proud of himself. In fact this man invented the formula of taking opportunities by the horns and making the most out of them with an aim of coming out on top. He is a man of his word, honest, intelligent and straightforward.
Glenfiddich which in translation from Scottish means the ‘Valley of the Deer’ was founded in 1886 and has become one of the most recognized labels in the world. The fact that it is still family owned five generations later speaks to the proliferation and longevity of the brand. The Glenfiddich story features vision, ambition, dedication and a canniness and underlying desire to do things differently which is the secret behind the superior liquid.
Capital Club recently held a four course whisky pairing dinner where the 12, 15 and 18 year old whiskys were paired with various foods. I haven’t been to as many whisky pairings as I have been to wine pairings though there isn’t much of a difference when selecting what kinds of whiskies to pair with what kinds of food. When whisky is paired with food, subtle whiskies complement lighter flavours and spicy whiskies complement fuller-flavoured dishes.
On this night we were taken through the process this superior liquor goes through at the distillery with the amiable Thami Banda, Africa’s Premium Brand Specialist at William Grants and Sons. The intimate setting provided the best environment to learn all things Glenfiddich.
At the end of the night, we were treated to an unforgettable surprise where we got to taste the 21 year old Glenfiddich whisky. What makes this patiently matured whisky unique is the fact that it is finished in Caribbean rum casks which gives the scotch a kiss of exotic spice. This is a drink that demands that you enjoy it neat without ice or water. It has presence and an elegant presentation that puts it at the top of the distillery’s regular range.
