Wine, to some extent, is a sophisticated drink. In my imagination, if I could give it a personality it would be those outspoken, yet suave divas, oozing with style and elegance but so delicate you would think raindrops would leave them injured.
Wine is a drink which has its own character, one that is so strong it demands to be drank with just the same measure of class and elegance. However, not everyone appreciates the elegance that is wine and they disrespect the drink by downing it in the most unimaginable ways.
It demands respect I mean, when it breathes, it opens up its flavors making you enjoy it in the most profound way. Taking it with any less respect is unacceptable and so these are the things you should and shouldn’t do when savouring this remarkable drink
Hold your wine glass by the stem
There is a reason why the wine glass has two sections, the bowl and the stem. The stem is where your hand is supposed to be when enjoying a glass. This is because holding the glass by the bowl changes the temperature of the wine denying you a chance to enjoy all its different flavours.
Avoid overfilling your glass
Overfilling your glass will make it hard for you to appreciate all the aromas. One third to half full is considered proper glass filling. But then again if your all alone at home and you are pulling an Olivia Pope kind of dinner, fill your glass away.
Ice cubes are for whisky and cocktails
Adding ice cubes in your wine in a way demeans all the hard work the wine maker put into making the wine as the consistency will be changed especially if it’s a bottle of fine wine. If you want your ice chilly put the entire bottle in an ice bucket instead.
If you have to, swirl your glass gently
People swirl their wines to allow the smells to be released up to the nose for a chance to appreciate all its flavours. In case you do want to appreciate your wine, a gentle swirl is enough. Plus swirling it like a hot cup of porridge that you are trying to cool might just end up destroying your outfit.
Please don’t drink wine from the bottle
Is there even anyone who does this? I cannot emphasize this enough. Chugging your wine from the bottle is just point blank rude to the wine itself. Remember wine is a respectable and delicate drink, find a wine glass and pour it in or just a normal glass if you don’t have a wine glass. Just don’t chug it down like a bottle of water.
